Bradford Millennium Way Relay (2013)

For those of you who are unaware of this race The Bradford Millennium Way Relay is a relay of five legs with two runners per leg, taking place each June. Starting from and returning to Bingley, taking in Wilsden, Denholme, Oxenhope, Haworth, Oakworth, Steeton, Silsden, Addingham and Ilkley with some stunning scenery en-route. The race attracts teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire and each year usually includes teams from Belgium and Holland.

This year we just about managed to get two teams together and they did us proud, the men’s team came 24th out of 45 with a club record broken on leg 3 by Dave Short and Peter Chesterton, they did it in a time of 01:17:57 well done guys. The Ladies team came 41st out of 45 with an exceptional run from Joanne Sharp and Jeannette Richards on Leg 5 who did it on 01:40:19 we had a bit of girl power on that leg, they beat the men!! Sorry guys I am sure you will be back next year.

I have to say thank you to Debbie Bolton who volunteered to run leg 2 with me, one of our runners was injured just a few days before and she was brought in at the last minute. This was the first time she had run over this type of terrain and there is one almighty steep hill at the finish (thanks to Adam and Craig for their support getting us up there, we needed it)

A very special mention must go the two girls on leg 4, Freda Southworth and Madeline Haworth who have been running together for 20 years, I am sure they won’t mind me saying that as they have both had birthdays this year, the combined age is 130 years (looking great girls). It was an outstanding performance especially as Freda had a fall and she looked like she had just come out of a coalmine when she finished. Well done girls we are proud of you.
